Dr. Shonali Laha is Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at FIU. She has been a member of the faculty since 1994.
Dr. Laha’s areas of interest include physicochemical and microbial processes affecting the fate of organic and inorganic contaminants in natural soil and water systems, hazardous waste treatment technologies and environmental protection in developing countries. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental engineering and bioremediation engineering.
Dr. Laha received her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1992. Prior to pursuing her doctorate, she earned an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa and a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India.
Dr. Laha takes her students on regular field trips to locations such as the Everglades National Park and the Miami-Dade County Resources Recovery Facility. She is passionate about the preservation of natural systems and protection of wildlife and works to share that passion with her students.
