Carlos Hernandez

Carlos Luis Hernandez, 59, a devoted family man, dedicated civil engineer, and passionate advocate for the environment, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, November 9th. He was returning from a US Department of Commerce Delegation in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he was participating in a federal program to do what he loved most—share his immense knowledge of water and wastewater issues. Carlos dedicated over three decades of his life to preserving the environment, leaving an indelible mark on both the public and private sectors. His 20-year tenure as the Water and Wastewater Division Chief at the Miami Dade County Department of Environmental Resource Management was not just a job—it was his pride and joy. Carlos played an integral role in protecting the County’s groundwater and surface water and had a unique way of thinking outside the boxMessage from Professor Hector Fuentes

“Carlos inspired and honored all of us in different ways, at different times and places. He achieved academically and in his professional life. To me, he was a Champion in life and for many others who interacted with him. With his life and professional achievement, Carlos honored his community, his alma mater and served the Country well. Among all my students, Carlos distinguished himself as an intellectual leader and a role model. I had the honor of being his mentor and major professor. I and my FIU colleagues in our Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, who taught him during the late 90’s, have always been very proud of all his accomplishments.”
