Concentrations

The MS in electrical engineering requires student to choose at two concentrations and complete six credit hours in each. Currently available concentrations include:

Program Information

  • Application Requirements
    • 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution
    • Submit the FIU Master’s Program Online Application, which will ask you to submit:
      • Official transcripts of all previously earned college or university credits
      • A statement or letter of intent
      • Three letters of recommendation
      • A statement of objectives
      • Resume or CV
    • English language proficiency requirements for international applicants

  • Thesis Option

    The MS in electrical engineering includes both a Thesis and Non-thesis option. The Thesis option requires completion of a master’s thesis for 6 credits.

    The master’s thesis must be presented to a Thesis Committee consisting of three members with Graduate Faculty Status. Once approved by the committee, the student will present a thesis defense in the form of a public lecture.

  • Non-thesis Option

    The Non-thesis option requires 6 credits of electrical engineering math courses, 12 credit hours from two concentrations and 12 credits hours of electives. For more information on eligible electives and requirements, view the University Catalog.

    • 6 credit hours of mathematics (EEL5171 Advanced Systems Theory, EEE 5543 Random Signal Principles, EEL 6020 Numerical Analysis of Electrical Devices, or STA 5206 Design of Experiments)
    • 3 credit hours of artificial intelligence (CAI 5855 Introduction to Applied AI, CNT 6154 Advanced Machine Learning, EEL 6821 Computer Vision)
    • 12 credit hours from two Areas of Interest
    • 9 credit hours of electives
  • International Students

    International students should refer to the FIU International Admissions site for additional instructions on how to apply or enroll as a first-time or transferring international student.

  • STEM Designation

    The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering is a STEM-designated program. After program completion, international students have the opportunity of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work within the U.S. for up to 36 months (one year of OPT + two years of STEM OPT) for STEM designated programs.
