Dr. Hector R. Fuentes is Professor of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of FIU. Dr. Fuentes has been with FIU since 1992.
Dr. Fuentes’ experience and contributions focus on environmental and water resources engineering issues. He has developed and taught environmental engineering courses for university curricula and professional organizations. His experience includes being principal, co-principal and investigator of research and projects, and his areas of interest include environmental and water resources engineering; green and sustainable engineering solutions; solid and radioactive waste management; appropriate technologies for developing countries; and Latin American environmental policy.
Dr. Fuentes received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1982. Before pursuing his doctorate, Dr. Fuentes earned two Master’s degrees from Vanderbilt: an M.S. in Engineering Management in 1982 and an M.S. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering in 1980. He also received a degree in a five-year Civil Engineering program from Industrial University of Santander, Colombia in 1972.
Before joining FIU, Dr. Fuentes worked in various consulting roles for such influential organizations as USAID, UNESCO, the National Science Foundation, USEPA, and the Inter-American Development Bank.
Dr. Fuentes’ technical publications, of which he has authored or co-authored over two hundred, are in the fields of water resources and water quality engineering; environmental unit operations and processes; fate and transport of hazardous and radioactive waste contaminants; green and sustainable engineering and pollution control, minimization and prevention. He also serves as a referee for various environmental professional journals and research organizations.
Dr. Fuentes has had professional affiliations with the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP), and Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers. He serves as a faculty advisor for FIU Tau Chi Alpha (National Environmental Engineering Honorary) and the Water Environment Federation/Florida Water Environment Association (WEF/FWEA) Student Chapter at FIU. Additionally, Dr. Fuentes has been lauded with numerous honors, including awards from the AEESP, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and Florida Water Environment Association.
