The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University is proud to share that Dr. Berrin Tansel has been named to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2026 class of Distinguished Members. ASCE announced the 2026 class on April 10, 2026, and Dr. Tansel was included among this year’s honorees.
ASCE describes Distinguished Membership as its highest honor available to civil engineers, recognizing individuals whose accomplishments reflect exceptional leadership, innovation, and professional impact. The 2026 class will be formally inducted at the 2026 OPAL Gala on Thursday, October 15, in Reston, Virginia.
According to ASCE, Dr. Tansel was recognized for her transformative leadership and pioneering research in water conservation, coastal water quality, and concentrate management, as well as for her broader contributions to environmental engineering and water resources management. ASCE also highlights her expertise in water quality management, advanced treatment processes, contaminant fate and transport modeling, infrastructure resilience, water reuse, desalination, and sustainable urban water systems.
Dr. Tansel is a professor in FIU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. ASCE’s profile also notes her sustained impact through scholarship, mentorship, professional service, and educational outreach, including programs that broaden participation in STEM.
