From Haiti to FIU, Boopy Sylvestre’s journey to becoming a civil engineer is a story of perseverance, dedication, and leadership.
Growing up in Haiti, Boopy was deeply impacted by the devastation of the 2010 earthquake, which fueled his determination to contribute to safer, more resilient infrastructure. Overcoming financial and cultural challenges, he moved to the U.S. at 22 years old, working multiple jobs while excelling academically.
After graduating with honors from Miami Dade College, Boopy transferred to FIU’s Civil and Environmental Engineering program, where he maintained an outstanding 3.89 GPA. His leadership extended beyond the classroom—he formed study groups, mentored peers, and gained hands-on experience through internships in water resources, structural engineering, and construction estimation. His achievements also include certifications in architectural drafting and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
This Fall 2024, Boopy is recognized as one of FIU’s outstanding graduates, a testament to his resilience and unwavering commitment to making a difference. As he prepares to graduate, his success serves as an inspiration to future engineers and those striving to rebuild communities through innovation and dedication.
