The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at FIU is pleased to announce that the third lecturer of the 2013 FIU CEE Distinguished Speaker Series is Soroosh Sorooshian, Ph.D. of the University of California, Irvine, who will be delivering a presentation on “Climate Change and the Global Water Cycle: Efforts in Monitoring, Modeling and Ability to Forecast Changes.”

The lecture will take place on Friday, April 12 at 2:00 pm ET in room 1112 of the FIU Engineering Center.

Dr. Sorooshian is Distinguished Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth System Science Departments and Director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing at the University of California, Irvine. His areas of expertise are Hydrometeorology, water resources systems, climate studies and application of remote sensing to earth science problems with special focus on the hydrologic cycle and water resources issues of arid and semi-arid zones. He also consults on problems related to surface hydrology and urban flooding.

Prior to 2003, Dr. Sorooshian was a faculty member at the University of Arizona for 20 years. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), among many other affiliations. He has received a multitude of awards and testified to both Senate and House sub-committees on earth observations from space and water resources issues.

In his April 12 presentation at FIU, Dr. Sorooshian will discuss how population growth, shifting demands in water consumption, and uncertainty resulting from global climate change have resulted in the need for more efficient use and effective management of water resources. He will provide perspective on how water resources managers must utilize more sophisticated planning tools, including advanced observation systems and hydrologic prediction tools.

We hope you will join us for the lecture. The full details of Dr. Sorooshian’s speaking engagement are below.
