The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at FIU is pleased to announce that the first lecturer of the 2013 FIU CEE Distinguished Speaker Series is John W. Fisher, Ph.D. of Lehigh University. He will be giving a presentation, entitled “Durability of Existing & Future Steel Bridges,” on February 22.

Dr. Fisher, a renowned academic and expert on steel bridges, will provide a brief history of the development of the fatigue design provisions that are currently used in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, as well as in other specs worldwide. Dr. Fisher will also address some new findings with respect to fatigue design and discuss corrosion barriers to durability, the use of high performance steels, and the development of orthotropic steel decks to achieve more than 100 years of service life.

The lecture will take place from 2:00-3:00 pm on February 22 in Room 2440 of the FIU Engineering Center. Those who cannot attend in person are encouraged to view a live webcast of the presentation.

Dr. Fisher is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at Lehigh University & Director Emeritus of the Engineering Research Center on Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS). He is a graduate of Washington University and earned his M.S.CE and Ph.D. degrees from Lehigh University. Dr. Fisher was Professor of Civil Engineering at Lehigh University from 1969 to 2002, when he became Professor Emeritus, and served as the Director of the ATLSS Research Center from its establishment by the National Science Foundation in May of 1986 until September of 1999.

Dr. Fisher has received a multitude of professional awards, including the Roy W. Crum Award for outstanding achievement in transportation research from the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He is a member of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the transportation research board of the American Welding Society, and the American Institute of Steel Construction.

Dr. Fisher is a specialist in structural connections, the fatigue and fracture of riveted, bolted, and welded structures, the behavior and design of composite steel-concrete members, and the performance of steel bridges.
